Review: Shilling Brewing Company
Shilling Brewing Company
92 West George Street, Glasgow G2 1PJ
I popped in for a quick drink on a Thursday night while I was waiting to meet friends for dinner. Inside is a completely different look from Horton's - it's modern, classy and has some really interesting decor - probably not what you'd expect from a brewery/pub. It's more upmarket than most and so you can happily go in for a drink when you're dressed up on the way out somewhere and you won't look out of place.
I was on my own and the staff were incredibly friendly and chatted to me while I sat at the bar so I didn't feel like a total nigel. I initially wanted a cider but then spotted Little Creatures sold by the bottle so got a bottle of that - it's a lovely Aussie beer and not that many places in Glasgow have it.
I like that Shilling are brewing their own beer, right in the heart of Glasgow. You can see the tanks behind the bar and as you go downstairs to the loo, there's a brewing room you can peek into (I don't think you can just walk in there though! It is available for private functions). As well as their own beers they do Drygate, Williams Bros, Guinness and Tennents on tap, plus bottled options and cider. I don't know if they have any wine offerings.
The other thing I like is the pizza and the open kitchen so you can see the pizzas getting prepared right in front of you. I have tried the food but it was at a launch night so I need to go back before I can properly review it - I will say the lamb mince pizza was CRAZY good and really impressed me seeing as I don't even like lamb. That's what I'll be ordering next time I'm in.
I like this new addition to Glasgow. It's doing something a bit different and from what I've experienced, it's doing it well. I know some people are put off by the idea of "craft beer bars" thinking they might be pretentious or snobby, or hipster, but I do genuinely think this place has mass appeal to most tastes. I'm looking forward to going back for a proper try of the food very soon.
