Review: Elena's Spanish Bar & Restaurant
Elena's Spanish Bar & Restaurant
90 Old Dumbarton Road, Glasgow West End G3 8PZ
Replacing the Grumpy Goat, Elena's seemed to pop up really quickly - it's because not much has changed inside apart from some Spanish flags and a bull design on one on the walls. We decided to pop in for a quick lunch on a Sunday and sat in the main bar area which I prefer to the dining space downstairs which can be a little dark.
They have a set menu for £10 where you get three tapas dishes and dessert or coffee which I think is pretty reasonable. We each ordered our dishes to share - I got the patatas bravas, pork loin and blue cheese croquettes, Graeme ordered ham croquettes, chorizo and meatballs. We also got bread and a complimentary starter of a bruschetta-type dish topped with crab (I think!) which was lovely.
The food arrived quickly - really quickly, in fact! It's called an express lunch for a reason I guess and would be ideal if you were in a hurry. Of the dishes we tried, the pork loin was my favourite - something a bit different from other tapas places and served in a really lovely sauce. The bravas was really nice - no creamy sauce, just tomato and the croquettes were exceptional. I don't think I've ever had such rich blue cheese croquettes, they were heavenly. The dessert was a strawberry cake which was really nice, I wouldn't normally have dessert but seeing as it was included I thought I might as well!
Staff were friendly and really helpful and we never had to wait long for drinks or service. I do need to comment on one interaction I overheard at the next table where the waitress asked the customer to stop "vaping" and the customer was a little rude in her reply. I thought the restaurant handled it really well and I appreciated that she asked the customer to stop!
All up, the food was really tasty and I will definitely be back for another meal very soon as the staff were so nice and it was a really decent price (like £30 for lunch for two including drinks).
